Malahat

The ‘Malahat’ is the term commonly applied to the Malahat Drive, a 25 km portion of Trans Canada Highway 1 running along the west side of Saanich Inlet and to the surrounding region.

The road was first cut as a cattle trail in 1861 and was then upgraded to wagon road standards in 1884. It became a paved road in 1911. The name originates from the Malahat First Nation, whose ancestors used local caves for spiritual enhancement.

The peak of the Malahat Drive summit reaches an elevation of nearly 1200’, and the mountain is considered one of the most sacred Indigenous sites on southern Vancouver Island. Some of the best views of the Greater Victoria area are found from view points at the peak of the Malahat drive.

The family friendly and growing communities of Shawnigan Heights, Malahat, Mill Bay and Cobble Hill are all within a short commute from Greater Victoria.
